  1. My friend Andy and I have been trying to get a writing group going for years now. We've had some interest, but people tend to come and go. The two of us have always tried to have weekly meets in local pubs to talk over books we love, as well as our own ideas and efforts to produce. We named our little (very little group at times) the Registry of Unusual Absences, due to our occasional tendencies to opt-out for bizarre reasons. This led to the rule that if one missed a scheduled meeting, the perpetrator owes 1000 words of fictionalised explanation.

In December we set aside some time to road-trip to Oxford, in the snow, as it turns out. The first stop was the Eagle & Child, where we managed to settle in where JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis would meet the Inklings every Tuesday morning. We too made it there on Tuesday morning with 5 minutes to spare.

We took a long walk up to the house on Northmoor Road where Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings, then carried on to pay our respects to the man himself at Wolvercote cemetery.

    A long overdue outing!
